November 26, 2008, marked a dark chapter in India’s history when Mumbai, the nation’s financial capital, was turned into a battlefield. Known as 26/11, the coordinated attacks by 10 terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) brought the city to its knees, claiming 166 innocent lives and leaving over 300 injured.

The terrorists targeted iconic locations, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, and Nariman House, causing widespread devastation over four harrowing days. Amidst the chaos, India witnessed unparalleled bravery from security personnel who put their lives on the line to protect the city.

Heroes Who Sacrificed Everything

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

A member of the National Security Guard (NSG), Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan led his team to rescue hostages at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. For his courage and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble

Tukaram Omble’s selflessness became a defining moment of the 26/11 attacks. Unarmed, he tackled Ajmal Kasab, the sole terrorist captured alive, holding onto the barrel of his rifle as Kasab fired repeatedly. Omble’s sacrifice ensured Kasab’s capture, providing crucial evidence against Pakistan-based terrorism. He was also posthumously honored with the Ashoka Chakra.

Hemant Karkare

As the chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Hemant Karkare led the fight against the attackers at Cama Hospital. Alongside senior officers Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar, he confronted the terrorists but was tragically gunned down. Karkare’s leadership and sacrifice remain etched in the nation’s memory.

Ashok Kamte

Known for his fearless demeanor, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte was a braveheart who stood firm against criminals throughout his career. On 26/11, he joined Karkare and Salaskar to confront the terrorists, ultimately laying down his life for the city. His valor earned him the Ashoka Chakra posthumously.

Vijay Salaskar

Head of Mumbai’s Anti-Extortion Cell, Vijay Salaskar had a reputation for taking on organized crime. He was martyred alongside Karkare and Kamte during the attacks, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and courage. Like his comrades, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously.

A Legacy of Resilience and Sacrifice

The bravery of these heroes not only saved countless lives but also showcased the indomitable spirit of Mumbai and its defenders. Their sacrifices continue to inspire a nation determined to stand strong against the forces of terror.

As we mark 16 years since the attacks, let us remember and honor the courage of these bravehearts. Their legacy reminds us to remain vigilant, resilient, and united in the face of adversity.

Never Forget. Never Forgive.
